Reiki is a gentle yet powerful hands-on technique that promotes the body’s natural healing
processes, increasing energy levels and well being. As a complementary healing art, it is not
intended to replace but to help the body's passage through medical treatment. As such, its
results can be as gentle as a feeling of deep relaxation, and it is completely natural and
safe. However, Reiki practitioners cannot legally heal, cure, diagnose or prescribe, and do
not seek to. Reiki practitioners merely give permission to be used as channels for the Reiki
energy. That energy is used by the receiver’s body and mind in accordance with their greatest
and most appropriate need.
The word Reiki is a combination of 'rei', or universal energy; and 'ki', life force. Its roots
are in Tibetan and Shinto traditions, but was developed in Japan as a way of strengthening and
codifying the healing arts of many of the world's spiritual practices. Thus no faith, belief or
religion is required. Again, a Reiki practitioner does not control Reiki, but is only a channel
for it. Anyone can give Reiki, once attuned during a Reiki Workshop. There seems to be much
debate around attempts to control the spread of this art, but at its heart and inception, Reiki
is a gift to all of us, and merely serves to awaken us to abilities we are all blessed with.
Reiki attunements are divided into three main levels. With Reiki 1 attunements, a person can use
Reiki for personal use, on themselves, freinds, family and so forth. Enough time should pass
between this and any Reiki 2 attunement for the practitioner to be comfortable with their art,
and ready to practice on a professional basis. Some Workshops will allow you to receive Reiki 1
and 2 in a single setting, but many reputable Reiki Masters, including my own, are alarmed by
this trend. Reiki attunements have a powerful impact on every level of the body and soul, and
time is needed both to adjust to this new reality, and to the great responsibility of being a
Reiki practitioner. I waited a full year between Reiki 1 and Reiki 2.
Reiki 2 practitioners can also begin to practice distance energy techniques, and to consider the
final stage of becoming a Reiki Master and responsible for the transmission of the Reiki
lineage and heritage to others. This final stage needs years of experience and a true
dedication to the care of others. I am still waiting. Finding a Reiki Master you can connect well with for your
attunements is more important than the particular flavour or tradition that they practice,
or the hand positions they teach. Mine is
here.
