I am not, this far, a trained crystal healer, but I do use crystals in many areas of my
practice. There are many sources that will guide the novice on uses and meanings of the
different stones, so I content myself here with detailing my personal favourites to work
with and wear.
As guides in this, I use Melody's encyclopaedic 'Love is in the Earth', Judy Hall's
definitive 'Crystal Bible', Naisha Ahsian's inspired 'Crystal Ally Cards', and a lot of
intuition and listening to my own reactions on all levels. And that, eventually, is by far
the best crystal guide to have. Sometimes a particular stone will feel hot or cold, or
tingle on the palm, sometimes it will just catch my eye across a room or shop. I am also
lucky to have dear friends with much greater collections than mine, who lend and even
donate pieces to me.
The ultimate shaman's stones for me are turquoise, which helps me relax and flow into my role,
and labradorite, which helps ensure others relax and flow around me. I have pendants in both,
as well as raw Cornish turquoise, and various pieces of labradorite.
Garnet and jasper are my preferred grounding stones, the former to wear, and the latter to
hold. My husband has the most magnificent and extremely heavy jasper globe, which is the most
grounding stone I know.
For protection on various levels, I use flint, jet, black tourmaline and different types of
obsidian. The jet in particular is a powerful piece.
For healing, cleansing and other 'light' energy work, I am gathering a range of points, from
clear quartz, through citrine, celestite and amethyst to more unusual varieties and inclusions.
This takes time, but I hope to supplement them with some Herkimer diamonds, having felt the
amplification they bring.
I also adore rhodocrosite and rhodonite, both of which have rebalanced me for different reasons
in the past.
Apart from the crystals, our altar is filled with talismans, tokens, flint arrowheads, the
occasional bone, feather and leaf, statues of various divine spirits, incense, candles, and
the most magnificent triple candle holding, Brighid's Cross carving, which was a gift from a
kind and generous soul at a festival one year. Her only condition was that it be used in a
ritual setting, and it has never been used for anything else.
