I am not, by nature, a very technically minded person. Most of my working practices are
intuitive, not logical. You might ask why I choose to design websites at all. You might
assume that, like many graphic designers, I produce websites with a copy of
ImageReadyTM
in one hand, and GoLiveTM in the other.
Or DreamweaverTM . Or, goddess forgive,
FrontPageTM .

But I don't. I hand code. If I'm losing you already, take a look on the tabs on your
browser window for 'View'. Find 'Source' or 'View Source'. It'll show you what websites
are really made of. I write that. Not a program.

The thing is this. The internet can be an incredible tool both to use and to be a part
of. The internet as I see it is fundamentally anarchic, resistant to regulation and
possibly even revolutionary. It could give you access to an unlimited amount of
information (and propaganda). It will have the kind of impact television or even the
printing press had on western culture, and in a much shorter time. If nothing else, it
is a wonderful way to share knowledge and advertise skills.

In order to do that, however, websites do not need to be 'cool', 'urban', or have logos
that spin - they need to have stable interfaces, clean code and elegant design. They need
to work in both current and older versions of the major browsers. They need as far as
possible to follow the current standards for HTML and other languages. They need to be
well organised with a strong visual theme and attractive but intuitive navigation. They
need not to confuse you.

Quite simply, I don't trust any program to have the high standards of functionality,
useability and accessibility that I do. That's why I hand code. And if a wide-eyed,
faery-child shamanic artist like myself can do it...
